August 2025 newsletter
We’d like to extend a warm welcome to our new sustaining members and email subscribers.
We’re so grateful that you’re here!
Upcoming “Pack the room”
With school back in session, the work Move Lebo does is more important than ever. We are committed to safer streets, designed for people. One of our key focus areas over the upcoming weeks will be working with the Municipality on Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs). What does this mean? The short answer is safer walking conditions for kids (and adults)! Wanna deep dive? Check out NACTO.
LPIs give pedestrians a head start of 3–7 seconds when entering an intersection.
LPIs enhance the visibility of pedestrians in the intersection and reinforce their right-of-way over turning vehicles.
LPIs have been shown to significantly reduce pedestrian-vehicle collisions.
Cost to implement is relatively low compared to other options as LPIs utilize existing traffic lights.
LPIs in our community are inconsistent. Some intersections have none while others have 3 seconds. In PA, cars must stop, by law, for pedestrians in a crosswalk. However, pedestrians may not enter a crosswalk unless it is “safe to do so”. LPIs make it so that is is safe to cross the street and puts the liability on the driver.
We want the municipality to increase the LPI to 7 seconds at all lights within a 1/2 mile of a school. It may not seem like much but the next time you cross the road count to 7 and see how far you get. 7 second LPIs will ensure safer walking conditions for all residents, especially children. The best part - the Municipality has the power to make these changes.
Stay Tuned! We are planning a “pack the room” event and we need you there. Come and tell the Commission that you want safer walking conditions!
[Back-to-school cleanup in action!]
celebrating wins
Successful back-to-school sidewalk cleanup- our teams were out and about in the community picking up trash and clearing sidewalks for the start of school
Official partnership with the Mt. Lebanon Police Department on a Connected Car Workshop coming up on October 12
The citizen-powered Telraam (aka Francois) traffic monitoring device is up and running, collecting data in the community
More and more “20 is Plenty” yard signs are popping up
MEET OUR NEW FRIEND, FRANCOIS!
Francois is joining us from the Telraam Family in Belgium.
Who is Francois? What is Telraam?
Francois is the name we gave to our first Telraam traffic monitoring device. It’s discreet and user-friendly.
Telraam is a citizen-powered solution for collecting multi-modal traffic data. Traffic data that can be used to design better streets. We envision using the data to support the need for traffic calming and road redesign. Move Lebo members can request to borrow the Telraam device to collect their own data to support traffic calming petitions. We plan to build our collection of devices to empower residents with the data to support traffic petitions.
Traffic too fast on your street? Interested in hosting Francois at your house? Contact us to learn more.

Vélo Couture Ride
Saturday, September 13th (Rain Date: Sunday, September 14th)
Meet at Mel’s Petit Cafe @ 8:30am
Celebrate bikes as transportation with a morning ride followed by crepes. Taking inspiration from Paris, wear your most fashionable bike friendly outfits on this slow-paced, 6-mile, sorta flat ride through the Willow Terrace and Cedarhurst neighborhoods. We'll start and end at Mel's Petit Cafe. The ride is open to all, but the route will not be closed to cars.
Say OUI and join us for a fun morning. RSVP here.
PARK(ING) DAY
Friday, September 19th
Popping up at the corner of Ralston & Beverly 8am - 4pm
Move Lebo will be popping up in support of Park(ing) Day to advocate for safer, greener, and more equitable streets for people. We plan to set up ahead of school drop-off with coffee and donuts for families on their way to school. After the morning rush, we plan to replenish supplies throughout the day in order to accommodate remote workers that may want to get out of the house during the day. If the weather is nice, we’ll plan to hand out popsicles in the afternoon following the end of the school day. Stop by and say hello!
WEEK WITHOUT DRIVING
Monday, September 29 – Sunday, October 5
The Week Without Driving was created so that those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all. Move Lebo is encouraging everyone to participate and experience what it’s like to navigate our community without the comfort of a car.
CONNECTED CAR WORKSHOP
Sunday, October 12th
Commissioners Lot 3pm - 5pm Space is limited, please reserve your spot in advance.
In case you missed it, Pennsylvania's law about mobile phone use while driving has changed. You can now be stopped for holding your phone while driving. This includes phone calls and using navigation. Even while stopped at a red light! Apple Carplay and Android Auto can help you stay connected and follow PA's new hands-free law. Most cars on the road today have these useful tools.
Join the Mt. Lebanon Police Department and Move Lebo at the Connected Car Workshop for some quick how-to tips. There will be volunteers to help get your cars set up. Just bring your car, phone, and a cable to connect up. We'll have some extra on hand if needed.
Move Lebo is a grassroots organization, independent of the municipality.
We rely on the generosity of our neighbors to fund our work. Become a member today!
Together we can make Mt. Lebanon a more connected community that prioritizes pedestrian safety and people-centered design.

SIDEWALK EXCAVATION
This wasn’t just any ordinary sidewalk cleanup…it was an excavation along Connor Road. We talk so much about LACK of sidewalks so it’s a real heartbreak when a sidewalk is neglected to the point that it can no longer be utilized. Move Lebo did its biggest cleanup yet, creating a safe, new passage for residents to use. Save the date for our next sidewalk clean up on July 12th @ 9:30am, location TBD. Know of an area in need of TLC? Drop us a note.

Move Lebo bike course @ Earth Day 2025
CELEBRATING WINS!
Allegheny County awarded Mt. Lebanon a $50,000 Grant for a Safety Action Plan, which will be used to support the Active Transportation Plan - cheers to advocacy work!
A 1st Edition Lebo Bike Map is now available - more details below
First successful walk audit in the Williamsburg Park area - see the results here
New partnership with Lions Club Farmer’s Market
50 + riders, 1 new member and lots of good conversation @ Earth Day
BikePGH collaboration, working to develop a “bike course in a box” - Move Lebo initiated and piloted the concept with great success
The magic of a little paint & poles
We’ve been working behind the scenes on a little something called Paint & Poles. The concept is cheap, quick and easy design solutions that make a HUGE impact on pedestrian safety. At our last General Meeting, we presented a few design ideas. Take a peek - we think you’ll love them! We will be presenting these concepts to the Mobility Board and the Commission for consideration.
SIDEWALK CLEANUP
As of last weekend, summer is unofficially here, which means more folks will be strolling, rolling, and skipping along the many miles of Mt. Lebanon's sidewalks. To make those journeys a little smoother and less treacherous, Move Lebo volunteers will be collecting trash, widening, and tidying up the sidewalks around Mt. Lebanon. We need all hands on deck! We’ll have gloves and bags but feel free to bring any loppers/shovels, if you’d like.
join us at an upcoming sidewalk cleanup: May 31st* & June 7th.
*Be sure to stop by and visit Lebo Green at the Uptown Farmer’s Market on May 31st. They’ll be near the Municipal Building and will have reusable bags, seeds, garden tools, and plants to give away - you don’t want to miss it!
Do you know of a sidewalk in need of some TLC? Submit it to our Report! page and we’ll add it to our list! Your input directs our work!
New! 1st edition LEBO BIKE map
We love biking around Lebo and we want to help you love it too! So we’ve been working to develop a map of some of our tried and trusted routes through Mt. Lebanon to our local coffee shops, grocery stores, and schools all without riding on Washington Road - although we do cross it a few times. Click the map below to view different biking routes. We’ve designed these routes to avoid busy roads and dangerous intersections. If you have any input, please comment right on the map! We’re also interested in hearing from you on specific route suggestions. Send us your feedback!
E-BIKE GROUP RIDE
Saturday, June 14 @ 9:00am - starting at Needle and Bean
Calling all e-bikes! Have an e-bike and want to learn the best/safest routes to get around your neighborhood? Or maybe you have questions about how to make e-biking part of your daily routine. The goal is to build community and help riders gain the confidence and knowledge needed for road riding.
The ride will be led by two avid e-bike riders and Move Lebo members, Beth & Morgan. The route will take riders to Trader Joe’s, using mostly quiet, residential roads. The ride is designed for beginners and will move at a leisurely pace, originating and ending at Needle and Bean. No experience is necessary. We’re here to help with the basics and to unload bikes, etc. or get a couple laps in prior to the start. The ride will last approximately 60 minutes. We’ll start the ride with some of the best coffee in town while we share tips and tricks and chat about future rides. Morgan and Beth will be at Needle and Bean early to help set up bikes or chat with some coffee.
This ride is open to riders without e-bikes but please note we will be navigating a number of hills.
RSVP REQUIRED.
PENNSYLVANIA BLVD TRAIL CLEANUP
Thanks to the perspiration and persistence of our Move Lebo board members, the Pennsylvania Blvd Trail is once again passable. Unfortunately, the major storm that hit our region a few weeks ago did a ton of damage to the trail. The trail was just about ready for wood chips when the storm hit and pushed things back to where we began (actually even worse!) After three cross-fit workouts, there are “only” 2 (!!) logs left on the ground in the middle of the trail! Nothing is left hanging in the air. They are much more comfortable to step over than the original bunch. And a fit biker would be able to lift a (non electric) bicycle over them. One of the logs is very wide, so we might need to let it decompose a bit. With that we decided to pause work on the trail for at least a month, and focus on sidewalk cleanups next. While it’s not complete, it is again walkable/usable.

LIONS CLUB fARMER’S mARKET Partnership
We are proud to announce that we are now partnering with the Mt. Lebanon Lions Club Farmer’s Market. Move Lebo will be assisting the Lions Club with the setup and takedown of the market space on the 1st and 4th Wednesday of each month. We’ll have a table at the market on those days and during the 4th market of the month, we’ll have a kid bike course setup. So bring along your kids and their bikes and come say hello!
If you are interested in helping to support the Lions Club Farmer’s Market, they are in need of volunteers to help with the setup and takedown of the market on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesday of each month, June - October. Please contact Lions Club President, Sue Lauer, if you are interested in helping out.
ACTION ALERT: PRT FUNDING CRISIS
Access to transit is critical to making our community more connected, vibrant, and walkable. We’ve frequently heard from our members and through public comments at municipal meetings that access to transit is one of the reasons people choose to move to and stay in Mt. Lebanon. However, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) is facing a funding crisis that could lead to huge service cuts across the Pittsburgh region and a fare increase to one of the highest in the country.
For Mt. Lebanon, that means starting next year we could see:
Truncation of the Red Line to Castle Shannon
Elimination of all bus service
Service ending at 11pm system-wide
$3 per ride fares, the same as New York City
Halting the Bus Line Redesign, which proposed new direct bus routes from Mt. Lebanon to Oakland and Carnegie
These changes will reverberate across the region – bringing more traffic to our already congested roads, worsening air pollution and stalling economic productivity.
To learn more about how we got here, see the info page on PRT’s website here.
How Can You Help?
Join us in advocating for a dedicated, long-term funding source for public transit. By acting now, we can secure the future of our transportation system and continue providing essential services to all. Local advocacy group Pittsburghers for Public Transit and statewide group Transit 4 All PA put together a form to contact state officials – Use the links to add your personal anecdotes about the importance of PRT.
For Mt. Lebanon residents, you can also contact Rep. Dan Miller and Sen. Wayne Fontana directly. When doing so, voice your support for transit’s vitality to our region (personal anecdotes are always good!), and ask that they work to create a dedicated funding stream for transit.
PRT is collecting public comments to help build the case for a dedicated funding stream. Sign up to attend a public hearing. The final one is on June 12. Pre-register now to ask questions and show your support for public transit!
Lastly, we need you to speak up! Tell your friends, family, and neighbors about the PRT funding crisis and encourage them to get involved – every voice counts!
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. Together we can help protect the future of public transit in our region.
