May 2026 Newsletter
May is National Bike Month and we are ready to celebrate!!
Established in 1956, National Bike Month provides an opportunity to encourage folks to explore their communities via bicycling to showcase the many benefits it brings. You can learn more by checking out the League of American Bicyclists. Keep on reading for some inspiration to get you out and about for National Bike Month.
Move Lebo’s Preferred Bike Routes
Interested in exploring our community on your bike, check out the BIKE MAP we created, which highlights our preferred routes for moving around the community safely. Or better yet, join us for our next group bike ride on Saturday, May 9th! More details below.
Move Lebo’s first Bike Repair Station & bike racks
We have some BIG news to share!! Thanks to YOU, we are making our first permanent installation in the community. We just signed our first MOU with the municipality! (In the world of advocacy work - this is huge!!) We have purchased a Dero Fixit Plus station and three bike racks, which will be installed outside of the main entrance of the rec center. This bike hub will be the first like it in our community and will provide a much needed resource for cyclists in Main Park. Exact install date is TBD but we’re hoping to have things in place by the end of June. Below is an example of what’s coming soon! And stay tuned - we’re making party plans to celebrate this win!
Group e-Bike Ride
| May 9th Bike Route |
Saturday, May 9th | 10am @ Needle and Bean
This ride is designed to help folks gain confidence riding on the streets of Mt. Lebanon. It will be a casual ride - no prior experience necessary. Please note the streets will be open to cars so be sure to review these safety tips. All bike types are welcome; however, we will be navigating a number of hills…but don’t sweat, we’ll take it slow.
The route will connect riders to three Mt. Lebanon business districts, using mostly quiet, residential roads. The ride is designed for beginners and will move at a leisurely pace, originating and ending at Needle and Bean. No experience required. The ride will last approximately 30 - 45 minutes.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
Celebrating Earth Day
We had a fantastic time celebrating Earth Day - a big shout out to Lebo Green for making it happen! This year, we mixed things up and curated a couple of seed mixes that we handed out to folks. Check out this awesome reel. Why seeds? Our core mission is safer streets, designed for people. While we have loads of concepts and designs on how to improve our streets, hardscape and road redesign is grueling. By planting seeds, you can instantly transform a sidewalk space, making it more pleasant for users. This simple concept beautifies the space and creates a barrier between pedestrians and cars and maybe even slows down the cars as folks stop to smell the flowers. We are big into cheap, quick solutions and this initiative will help show folks how easy it can be. If you missed your chance to grab a seed mix, there will be other opportunities to pick one up. We’ll be at the Lions Club Farmers Market on select dates or you can pick up some seeds at the Lebo Pride Celebration on June 15th because who doesn’t want to add a little zhuzh to their walk?
In addition to spreading some love through our seed mixes, we also shared our joy of biking with our youngest residents. Our learn to ride bike course was a hit! A HUGE thank you to BikePGH for their continued support. This is our third year collaborating with BikePGH to bring you the learn to ride bike course, inspired by the courses they run during Open Streets.
Adopt a highway clean up
In mid-April, our team did a cleanup along Castle Shannon Blvd - our newly adopted stretch of highway! As a participating group in PennDOT’s Adopt and Beautify Program, our scope of responsibility includes not only trash pickup but also beautification of the area. This includes things like weeding and vegetation management along with new plantings of wildflowers and trees meant to support native pollinators. We look forward to continuing to beautify this stretch of Castle Shannon Blvd to help promote the business district and make walking in the area safer and more pleasant. Keep an eye on our events if you’d like to help out with our next cleanup!
Bower Hill Blitz
Remember our Telraam friend, Francois? The data we collected via Francois during the month of November 2025 provided valuable insights regarding the traffic along Bower Hill. Using that data, our designers at Move Lebo created the “Bower Hill Blitz”. This design guide is packed full of budget friendly, quick build recommendations that will instantly improve pedestrian safety. In the coming weeks, we’ll be calling on you to help with community engagement as we build our collective voice to push these ideas forward. Interested in engaging with residents to share information regarding the Bower Hill Blitz? Drop us a line and we’ll add you to our volunteer list.
Walk Club
The first Walk Lebo event was a great success. Five participants enjoyed beautiful blue skies for their walk around Parker Gardens and Virginia Manor. Move Lebo member, Dave, has another neighborhood walk planned for Saturday, May 16th at 10am. This walk will explore the area around Jefferson Middle School and beyond. Dave will highlight pedestrian connections between neighborhoods, recent and planned transportation improvements as well as some historical points of interest along the way. Dogs and children in strollers are welcome! Optional gathering afterwards at a local coffee shop. We hope to see you on the 16th!

March 2026 Newsletter
Talk about March madness! The weather came in like a lion and is going out as… TBD. We hope you’ve been able to make the most of the sunny days and enjoy a walk, run or bike ride around the neighborhood. Keep an eye on our event calendar as we have some upcoming walk, run and bike events!
Celebrating Community
As an advocacy organization working for safer streets, designed for people, it often feels like an uphill battle. It’s hard to feel like you’re “winning” when so often you hear NO to your ideas/suggestions/requests. However, when you measure success through volunteer hours and community engagement we hit the jackpot. There are so many folks in our community that are willing to roll up their sleeves and get stuff done and for you we are so very grateful! You are why our organization exists. At our most recent trash cleanup, a group of volunteers tackled the area around the high school pedestrian walkway. A huge amount of trash was collected, including an aluminum can that may have been there since the Class of 1960. Walking through this area feels so. much. better!! Together, we are making our community a better place and that is what we call success!
Let’s Get Things Growing
We’re mixing things up! In the spirit of making our community more walkable, we’re spreading some love through two carefully curated seed mixes. The Mt. Lebanon Streetside Mix is a special mixture of Western PA natives, curated by Move Lebo for Mt. Lebanon. These plants are selected to withstand deer, salt, and dry heat once established - making them the perfect roadside mix (or any other sunny spot, really). A restrained palette of 4 species creates repetition and an intentional look. These species top out around 36 inches max to maintain visibility for pedestrians. Tight on space? We’ve got you covered. The Sidewalk Crack Mix is perfect for tiny spaces (see image below). This Sidewalk Crack Mix contains annuals which can grow in even the smallest of spaces - adding some beauty to your sidewalk or paved area. As with our perennial mix, these plants boast deer resistance. Simply scoop out the old dirt from the crack and put some fresh potting soil in. Spread seeds very sparsely - a handful of the mix contains hundreds of seeds. Works like a charm to create a division between you and the street. And who knows, it may even slow down traffic as folks stop to smell the flowers. These seed mixes will be available at our tent during the Earth Day celebration on April 26 - stop by and pick one up!
Sidewalk crack flowers in bloom - get your seed mix pack at our tent during the Earth Day Celebration.
Earth Day Celebration
April 26th | 11am - 3pm @ Mt. Lebanon Main PArk
Move Lebo is partnering with Lebo Green to bring you another fantastic Earth Day celebration. In addition, we’re proud to continue our partnership with BikePGH in order to host another Learn to Ride Bike Course, which has quickly become a fan favorite! While the course is BYOB(bike), we’ll also have a few balance bikes and pedal bikes to use. Helmets are required for all riders. A very special thank you to BikePGHfor their continued support & for lending us bikes and supplies!
Along with the bike course, be sure to stop by our tent and visit the creation station where kids can create DIY bike streamers. Help spread the word to your family and friends. This event is a wonderful opportunity for kids to enjoy a safe, car-free riding experience!
Planning to ride your bike to Earth Day? Our bike valet has got you covered! Look for our bike valet racks in the upper parking lot near the bike course.
Interested in volunteering at Earth Day with Move Lebo? Drop us a line! We are looking for help with the bike course and our creation station.

WE’VE ADOPTED A HIGHWAY
Exciting news - we’ve adopted a highway! We wanted to make our love of safe, clean walking routes official, so we adopted Castle Shannon Blvd. We’ll be tending to the section from the Scott Rd intersection (think Needle and Bean) to the intersection with Anawanda.
Come and check it out! We’re planning a sidewalk cleanup for this stretch on April 19th from 9:30am - 11am. We’ll supply the trash grabbers and bags, just bring yourself. We’ll start strong and fuel up at Needle and Bean then head out from there.
Introducing New Board Members
We’re thrilled to introduce our two new board members, Jennica and Ashley. Each brings a unique skill set and enthusiasm for safer streets, designed for people. We are fortunate to have an incredibly talented and dedicated board, these are the folks that make the magic happen both on the street and behind the scenes.
JENNICA BELLANCA
Jennica has been a Mt. Lebanon resident for five years and is dedicated to helping the municipality evolve into a safer, more connected community where everyone can thrive. As a human factors engineer specializing in health and safety, Jennica brings a professional passion for "simple solutions," designing environments that naturally work better for the people using them.
A parent of four, Jennica is frequently out exploring Lebo’s streets and parks. Whether logging miles with the Move Lebo Run Club or navigating school routes with their children, Jennica is a firm believer that a walkable, accessible community is the foundation of a vibrant local culture. By serving on the board, Jennica aims to champion infrastructure improvements from improving visibility, to connecting sidewalks, to integrating technology, that make our neighborhood safer for movers of all ages and types.
ASHLEY STEWART
Ashley is an instructional designer at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences IT. Her passion for learning and intentional planning carries over to urban design, and she is eager to engage in educational outreach to build more walkable communities.
Born and raised in West Virginia, Ashley studied English and secondary education then moved to Spain to teach for two years, during which she got around just fine without a car. Since that experience, she has been dedicated to making streets safer. After teaching public middle school in West Virginia for eight years and earning her doctorate in instructional design, she moved to Mt. Lebanon with her family in 2020. She has two children in the school system, and her vision is for every child in the district to feel safe on their way to and from school.
A proud Appalachian, Ashley loves to hike, fly fish, camp, and read anything about the region's culture and history. She also enjoys native gardening, knitting, thrifting, and writing fiction.
cALL TO ACTION: Allegheny County Safety Action Plan
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC), along with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Allegheny County, and the City of Pittsburgh, are furthering their commitment to ending traffic deaths and serious injuries on roads within Allegheny County through a new safety initiative called Vision Zero.
Vision Zero is based on the Safe System Approach, which follows several guiding principles to provide a holistic safety approach for all forms of transportation. Vision Zero incorporates proactive, preventative improvements to roadway design and focuses on enhancing safety for all road users.
The draft Safety Action Plan is ready for review and open for feedback. Please take a moment to check it out.

February 2026 Newsletter
In our last newsletter, we talked about ‘sneckdowns’ and it got a lot of folks thinking so we dug a little deeper and put these images together - special shout out to Joel Beeby for designing these. The next time the snow falls (and we hope that’s not anytime soon!!!), watch out for the sneckdowns in your neighborhood and use them for inspiration on ways to improve the comfort, safety and walkability of your street.

Active Transportation Plan Updates
If you weren’t able to attend the public sessions on February 25th, the best way to hear about the current status of the Active Transportation Plan (ATP) is from the recent Commission discussion session. The design team at Toole will be finalizing the draft ATP documentation and sharing it with both municipalities and their leadership for review and confirmation. The plan will be finalized this spring. Once the plan is finalized, it is critical that we advocate for funding to implement the recommendations. One of the most important ways to advocate for the ATP is through attending a Commission and/or Mobility Board meeting to make sure ATP funding is prioritized. We’ll continue to keep you updated on the status of the ATP along with specific ways you can advocate.
| Super cool to see our new State Representative-Elect Jen Mazzocco supporting the ATP! |
Update on PRT Busline resdesign
PRT's second draft Bus Line Refresh project website is live! All public-facing materials, interactive maps, route surveys, and engagement event schedule are now published here. There will be an in-person public meeting at August Wilson Center on April 7 and a virtual public meeting on May 6.
There are some big changes impacting Mt. Lebanon Transit riders. Potential negative impacts include the truncation of the 36 no longer serving South Hills Village and only running weekdays during peak hours. Additionally, there is no longer a route running on Cochran Road to the Virginia shops; however, there are also positives with a return to direct to Oakland service. Make sure you have your voice heard. Engage with PRT.
Sidewalk Cleanup
Sunday March, 8th 9:30am - 11am | meet @ Needle & Bean
The snow has finally melted and left behind a lot of trash and debris. Join us for a cleanup and help get our sidewalks back in shape for warmer weather. We’ll fuel up at Needle and Bean for some of the best coffee in town and head out from there. We’ll supply the tools, just bring yourself! Do you know of a sidewalk in need of a cleanup? We want to hear from you - send us an email.

How ‘bout dem “sneckdahns” n’at?!
“Sneckdahn” or “sneckdown” however you say it, let’s give three cheers for mother nature’s traffic calming! A sneckdown or snowy neckdown is snow-covered area that gives urban designers the ability to see the space that cars use or more importantly DON’T use. Sneckdowns provide insight into where roads are overbuilt and provide a free, temporary tool for urban planners to identify areas where traffic lanes could be narrowed, creating shorter, safer crossings for pedestrians and develop spaces where things like pedestrian plazas and bike lanes can exist. Do you have a good sneckdown picture? Send it our way - we’d love to see it!
Sneckdown = snow + neckdown
Neckdown is a term for sidewalk extensions that reduce the speeds and increase pedestrian access.
Same intersection different season…
